Oceans To Athena // Siren Song

Song: Siren Song Band: Oceans To Athena Album: Siren Song (Single) Location: Melbourne Date of release: 14/06/2017 Genre: Alternative/Post Hardcore Reviewer: Michael Dixon For Fans Of: Alexisonfire, Saosin, Sleeping With Sirens

It’s been almost two years since we’ve heard any new material from this Melbourne-based Alternative/Post-Hardcore band, though they’ve been far from inactive. The band describes this new single “Siren Song” as Somewhat of a sequel to 'Chasing Shadows', which certainly makes sense in terms of lyrical themes and music. The music video shows the band performing in a space surrounded by television screens all stacked on top of one another. The screens vary in display from hazy static to photos from each of the band member’s childhoods. It’s certainly a pleasant upgrade from the boring and cliched band playing in a white room music video.

Musically, this isn’t too far removed from the band’s previous EP “One Fight at a Time Pt. 1” which engaging clean vocals from Morgan, passionate backing vocals from guitarist Michael and bassist Nick, catchy alt-rock rhythms and an explosive chorus. The lyrics deal with not giving up on your dreams and goals despite the many challenges we’re faced with in life. My one criticism would be a lack of musical evolution. I think that they need to experiment a bit more with their sound or else their next EP could end up being carbon copy of what they’ve done before.
