Following their 2016 EP, ‘From Within The Broken’, Below Oceans 2017 single Losing sight is definitely a good example of the bands progression as writers.
With a soft and luring intro, this song quickly amps up and really hold you till the end. There’s a very good balance between a head banging, chuggy vibe and a fearful melody that really keeps the song going on without feeling to repetitive or boring, this makes it a super easy and and enjoyable listen, again highlighting the bands improvement with song writing. Along with overall writing, the clean singing in this new track have also definitely improved. Bands such as Underoath, In Hearts Wake, Northlane are some that come to mind when hearing these particular clean vocals. The lyrics seem to relate to a falling out of some sort and conveys a very strong understanding of how the perspective of the lyricists personal feelings. Vocalist Jordan Blair states in the first verse; “This hole you left inside of me, it engulfs my lungs and now I cannot breathe”. It’s made easy to understand that what happened with the individual being directed at in the lyrics had a very strong impact on the writer, resembling feelings not dissimilar to that of depression and recent break ups.
Overall this song was a great listen and really gives a 2011/2012 vibe back into the scene. I honestly hope to see more bands be influenced by these guys, it’s definitely a sound I’d like to hear more of.
