Being Jane Lane have been making some serious waves in the Aussie Punk scene lately and that’s down to hard work and producing catchy, enjoyable pop punk songs that hook you in on first listen. I’ve been lucky enough to play with the ladies when they were down in Sydney on their last EP tour and I had so much fun watching them and I was super keen to hear what more they could produce. When I saw ‘Sailboat’ pop up on my Facebook feed I had to listen to it then and there, and I was NOT let down. The song begins with some feedback and kicks in to an almost marching like rhythm throughout the verse with the rhythm guitar, bass and drums marching along and a nice little guitar lick thrown in to add some flavour. When the vocals kick in the first time I got Goosebumps. The aggressive nature of the vocals I LOVED and they match the dirty distortion on the guitars perfectly and it builds up nicely to the chorus of the repeated line of ‘Don’t Waste Your Time On Me’. I have no doubt you will be singing along with the chorus after the first listen, cause I sure was. The song has great dynamics throughout, going from the soft basslines to the toms getting a work out and the guitar’s coming in and out with some nice lead parts thrown in. The song ends with a badass little tapping solo which made me smile and I found myself having a great old time with the track. They lyrics tell the story of a girl who clearly has had a hard life and battles with addiction and an abusive partner. They tell a great (well not so great but you get me) story and they match the aggressive nature of the vocals and instruments. The track is also really well produced and comes out clean with each instrument cutting through and none overpowering what is already there, which adds to the great dynamics of the track. Overall, I’m a fan of Being Jane Lane, that’s pretty clear. But I think this track really does deserve to be heard by the masses. It’s a catchy, aggressive and very well written tune that shows off the song writing skills of the band itself and really showcases what we can expect in the future – and go see them live if you can, they are fun and are gigging constantly plus they put on a great show!
