“We drank We smoked We snorted Anything we could find The only thing we feared was being the last ones left behind”
Teasing the release of anticipated record, “This Is For You", Melbourne four-piece folk-punk collective The Suicide Tuesdays serve the fresh single ‘1997’, filled with aching nostalgia and painful honesty, reminding us of glistening our youth, and the inability to return. 1997 was a notable year, the first Harry Potter book hit shelves and Spice Girls were dominating the charts. However, front-man Joe Guiton, tells of a different 1997, creating a universe as vivid as J.K’s, telling of “misfit punk” teens who rebel without a care, relishing in the short-lived window of adult desires without adult responsibility.
This single features beautiful guitar melodies, simultaneously powerful and subtle creating the perfect backdrop to the expressive vocals of both Joe Guiton and Toffer Rush. The Suicide Tuesdays skilfully diminish the gap between music and the listener through the intimacy, that truly immerses you into their world for the entire four minutes.
As a new listener, I found their single heartfelt, enduring, authentic, and at times, brutally honest. It left me stunned in absolute awe, reflecting on my own teenage years. ‘1997’ built a foreign 90’s suburbia that somehow seemed so vividly familiar.
The boys create a sound of 90’s garage rock, most notably through the fuzzy guitar riffs and raw drum beats. This song is reminiscent of artist Lagwagon, and it’s clear to see how The Suicide Tuesdays very much have taken inspiration from their favourite musicians to produce their own melodious gem. ‘1997’ is a beautiful taste of their new album, and finishes leaving an undeniable craving for the full banquet. 'This Is For You' is available now through iTunes, Spotify, Bandcamp and all good streaming services and digital retailers.
