“No lights, no guidance along my way. Yet if I stand still inaction kills me just the same”
Quaint Attraction have been working hard putting all their efforts into their next release, and by working hard I mean it. The lads do everything themselves – and I mean EVERYTHING. From the writing, recording, mixing and mastering, Quaint Attraction throw themselves into their music and lay it right out for everyone to hear.
Their latest track ‘Control That I Can’t Find’ has just recently dropped and I was pretty keen to check it out. I’ve played with the lads when they came down and toured in Sydney (although our drummer got kicked out of the venue – but that’s for another time) and they were a great group of dudes and very talented.
The track kicks off with a nice dirty guitar riff, followed by the bass and finally the drums kick in and everyone is rocking out, the intro gave me a bit of a 90’s grunge feel with the tones and the riff itself. It really got my engaged with the song, not just because it was a sweet riff but the way it was layered all together was great and well mixed. The vocals kick in during the first verse and I’m instantly taken back to the early 2000’s and the rock bands of the time. Bands that produce good quality music that is also radio friendly. There are nice guitar lead licks throughout the whole track and they add extra flavour through the verses and chorus. The bass has some nice runs along the way as well, which gives off a Red Hot Chili Peppers vibe. The Chorus is catchy and sung well and with great emotion,it got stuck in my head after the second listen and I can see a group of sweaty people yelling it back at the lads.
The guitar solo! Being a guitarist myself, I love hearing others play, and this solo didn’t disappoint. It’s not going to blow you off your feet with pace and shredding, it’s just technically sound and perfectly executed for the track and the whole vibe of the song – a little bit of a John Frusciante feel to it. Following the solo is a little bit of a bass lick that brings in the drums and they are back smashing out the chorus again one last time.
The production is good on the track. There are some muffled sounds but overall it has come out pretty clean and clear, considering the lads have done it all themselves I take my hat off to them cause I know how HARD/time consuming/frustrating all that actually is.
Overall I enjoyed the track. It’s a solid release by the lads and they sound tight and like a well-oiled machine, they don’t skip a beat. I expect to hear more from them soon and hopefully catch them again next time they come to Sydney (hopefully playing with them :p). Well done lads, your DIY approach is working and in a world with over produced, unjustifiable bad music – you’ve truly ‘Made It On Your Own’ (to reference an earlier track).
