When I was living in Sydney, I had spent 2 New Years alone where I knew nobody. Until NYE 2016, where Vocalist JJ Brady had invited me to a party with the rest of the gang, and thus was the start of a great friendship with the We May Fall gang, now it's my turn to help these boys out.
I had the pleasure of having Deez (Matt) of We May Fall send me the album a few days ago, having been in the works for 2 years, you'd better believe me when I say I was excited to take on this opportunity of reviewing these boys.
The album starts with "The Light Bearer", having a melodic intro, you don't really expect such raw emotion and "Architechy" vibes, but when it all hits you'd want to go to your grandmothers nursing home and start throwing down with the old bitties.
"Dead", the boys in We May Fall must have written this song to sort the men from the boys, wanting to have you two stepping over the corpses of the weak, then the breakdowns hit and both boys and men shit themselves.
"Apart" Featuring Nate Toussaint of The Brave is my personal favourite, the dissonance and build up of the intro, the band really went to ham with this song, the techy, progressive guitar riffs and raw, emotionally powered vocals.
"Again" came out at the end of last year. The hype for that song was unbelievable, I remember my friend Dave Xuereb (Decrier) telling me I had to jump on that track ASAP and it was on repeat for about 3 or 4 days so I could learn the lyrics for it in time for the official release show, it's full of Djenty goodness and killer lyrics that'll keep you on your toes throughout the whole track.
"Down" Featuring Alex Reade From Drown this City, is a beautiful track, being both vocally melodic and soothing, its a great song to break up the heaviness of the album and just really shows you that We May fall know what they're doing. Alex had really added to this track with her Vocal capabilities, harmonizing with JJ's cleans and screams.
"Shadow Maker" Within the first second you hear the dirtiest 'bleagh' so you know it's going to be a great track. Honestly, its the most hyped song of the Album. I was at the girlfriends place at the time of writing this, She can vouch that with the writing process I had to stop every 5 minutes to mosh for inspiration. The production of each song had peaked my interest, T-bones (T-Bones Audio) blew it out of the water.
I spoke to JJ about the writing process behind "Forever" and what it means. "That one actually came together pretty organically. The music just flowed and the words followed. The whole song is a love note to our friends and everyone that has stuck by us."
"Asleep" Featuring Tanith Nair of Tanith, is the second last song on the album, filled with synth sounds, Sweet Djent riffs, harmonious vocals, hard hitting drum fills. "Asleep" shows you how extensive and how much pride the WMF boys put into their songs. Why they aren't playing in front of crowds of thousands is still quite confusing to me, they're underrated and its unfair.
"In Love" closes the curtains on the "the light bearer and Shadow maker" Album, There's a great reason this song in last, because if this song was first, you'd be knocked out by a flying kick to the face in the first few seconds. The heaviest song on the album award goes to "In Love" if you're a fan of moshing, this song will be your go to. Remember kids, drink milk to keep your bones healthy and to stop them from going Brittle, you'll need the strength if you plan on moshing to this song. We May fall have absolutely brought new meaning to Sydney's music scene. UNFD, sign these boys up, If they aren't on UNIFY 19 I'll be flipping tables in the UNFD HQ.
